One recent trip was an ATV ride in the Dixie National Forest near Brian Head, Utah. Brian Head is a winter ski area and well known mountain biking area in the summer. It is just less than an hour from Cedar City, Utah. A few hours north of Las Vegas and even closer to Saint George, Utah and Mesquite, Nevada.

We had a beautiful day of riding in the forests and meadows high up on the mountain. We visited our friends at Thunder Mountain Motorsports in Brian Head for rentals. They took good care of us. Their contact tel number is: 435 667-2288.

When I arrived in Las Vegas, the heat hit records of 114 degrees. I stayed for a few days and headed north to Utah. I am posting from Cedar City, Utah. As always, there is lots going on around Cedar City, Utah. Glen Campbell and his daughter Debby Campbell is doing a benefit concert July 19th at the SUU Centrun Arena. It will benefit the Iron County Care & Share food bank. Glen Campbell is a country music legend known as the Rhinestone Cowboy, with many hit songs that have been played for four decades.

The Neil Simon Festival opens July 19th at the Heritage Theatre and features Eddie Mekka, who is well known as Carmine Ragusa of the Laverne & Shirley TV show. The website is at www.simonfest.org.

If you’re visiting the Cedar City, Utah area or Brian Head, Utah area and need some ideas to cool off, here are a couple of quick trips. Cedar City, Utah has several city parks. Here is the park information from cedarcity.org website.

West Canyon Park

Coal Creek Trail

The Parklands path currently runs from the baseball park on 200 North through West Canyon Park and up the canyon approximately two miles. The paved trail parallels Coal Creek and is furnished at intervals with benches and water fountains. Native plants, trees and wildflowers bloom along the scenic pathway, where walkers, joggers and families enjoy fresh air and exercise in a natural outdoor setting.1.9 miles plus .6 miles recently added on.

I headed up Cedar Mountain on 14 East looking for a place to cool off a bit. There wasn’t enough shade for me. It was a hot afternoon, but I splashed around in Coal Creek for a few minutes. Here’s a pic.

Then a day or two later on another hot day. I continued up the mountain for a visit to Navajo Lake. Being up on the mountain. It was much cooler. The water was cold and it was a bit windy. There were lots of people fishing and a couple of boats on the lake. Along the trip to Navajo Lake we saw many lava flow areas of lava rock and lava beds. As well as a viewing area for a volcanic cinder cone.

The cinder cone is located east of Cedar City, Utah, on the western Markagunt Plateau. The Virgin River is born here, springing from the cliffs on the south end of the Plateau before making its way into the slot canyons and cliffs of Zion National Park. The Markagunt Plateau contains the following wilderness areas, Mineral Canyon, Bear Valley Peak - Little Creek Peak, Butler Peak, Bunker Creek - Horse Valley Peak, Sidney Peaks, Ashdown Gorge Expansions, Hancock, Lava Beds, Hatch Mountain, Gooseberry Point, Pink Cliffs, and Dairy Canyon. The Markagunt Plateau is one of Utah’s highest and largest plateaus. The name comes from an indian term meaning highland of trees.

The lake is located in Dixie National Forest, just a few miles from Cedar Breaks National Monument and the trip takes you through high alpine meadows. It is 1,500 acres, about 3 miles long and stocked with trout. Navajo Lake was formed thousands of years ago when a lava flow blocked the end of the valley. I read that the Paiute Indians had named it Pa-Cu-Ay, which meant Cloud Lake. The name was changed later.

Cascade Falls and Mammoth Caves are close by. There are hiking and mountain biking trails near by.

Cascade Falls hiking trail is a one mile, round trip hike that leads you to a waterfall that is the outlet of Navajo Lake with viewsof the Zion/Kolob Terrace.

Virgin River Rim Trail is a 32 mile moderate trail that’s good for hiking, mountain biking and horses where you will see Cascade Falls and Strawberry Point trails.

Navajo Loop is a winding 12 mile loop for mountain biking around the lake that’s great for novices with just a few climbs.

Marathon Trail is a 27 mile advance bike route from Navajo Lake to Brian Head. The trail head is located at Te Ah campground.

The area is a great place to cool off on a hot day, with lots of activities for year round outdoor recreation.

KANAB, Utah—Families and individuals from all fifty states and internationally are invited to attend the First Annual Amazing Earthfest Celebration, happening May 21-26, 2007 in Kanab, Utah. Here travelers will discover, learn from and celebrate national and state parks, national forests and public lands of the Colorado plateau located in Utah and Arizona.

Kanab plans to establish, host and support this broadly inclusive event each year in May, fostering education, scientific discovery and understanding, plus recreation and entertainment. Programs are planned for a host of visitor centers in the area, as well as guided site visits and expeditions to remote locations in the region. Creative Arts & Entertainment - Artists, musicians and storytellers will be on-hand to express their experience of the history, life and culture of the Intermountain West, through exhibitions, concerts and presentations, including competitions for prizes. Pioneer history and culinary arts will round out visitors’ enjoyment.

Outdoor Recreation - Campers, hikers, horseback riders, cyclists, mountain bikers, climbers, road tourists and off-road vehicle enthusiasts are invited to make Southern Utah & Northern Arizona their destination for this springtime event; to engage in a favorite sport, while enjoying the welcoming hospitality of area service providers. Covering 84,904 square miles, Utah is bordered on the north by Idaho, on the east by Wyoming and Colorado, on the south by New Mexico and Arizona and on the west by Nevada. Utah is located in the heart of the American West.

The land itself embraces everything from desert to alpine and is divided into three major kinds of landscape: Basin and Range, Middle Rocky Mountain and Colorado Plateau. (Now, don’t you wish you’d paid attention in that geography class?) To make it easier, we generally talk about the Great Basin, the Rockies and Canyon Country.

Southern Utah is a land of drop-dead beauty. Gorgeous! Awesome! Unbelievable! It doesn’t really matter which byway you take (but be sure to take Highway 12—Utah’s All-American Road); it doesn’t matter which St. George golf course you tee off, which back country guide you charter, which spa you use to escape: it’s all one stupendous eyeful after another. Ever wonder how Dead Horse Point State Park got its name? Well, a bunch of cowboys forgot to water the horses and…you get the picture. No matter what its origins, the views from Dead Horse will leave you speechless. Southern Utah is “The Old west…” “John Wayne Country…” “Little Hollywood…”

For amphitheaters chock-a-block with sandstone spires all aglow in luminescent earth tones: Bryce Canyon National Park. For looming sandstone walls guarding a pastoral Virgin River landscape marked by unique microclimates, fauna and flora: Zion National Park…Monument Valley, Lake Powell? Southern Utah is the kind of place other states can only dream of.

An ancient spirit inhabits southern Utah. It is evident in the cataclysmic forces that have thrust the earth up into snow-capped mountains; in the towering fins of ruddy sandstone cut by the patient forces of erosion into bridges, arches, deep canyons, and strange “hoodoos” of stone; in dramatic faults where the earth jumbles and twists, contrasting with gentle, rolling hummocks of “slick rock.

Visiting Utah can be quite an experience. The major airport to fly into the region is normally Las Vegas, Nevada for southern Utah tours. Saint George and Cedar City both have growing airports with thousands of travelers who fly there too!

Utah has five National parks. Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Zion National Park.

If that’s not enough of the most incredible landscape anywhere, there are 3 National Monuments. Cedar Breaks National Monument, Dinosaur National Monuments and GSENM, Grand Staircase National Monument. How about adding two National Recreation areas to the mix and maybe you’ll never want to leave Utah. The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area all add up to one of the most spectacular places on earth to visit.

Southern Utah has Saint George just a couple of hours north of Las Vegas. It has an elevation of 2,880 feet above sea level. St. George has an average annual temperature of 59.9° F with summer temperatures well into the 100s. Palm trees and red rock cliffs are the norm in Saint George along with all the convenience of a city of 100 thousand.

45 minutes north on highway Interstate 15 is Cedar City. It is a well known festival city. It is home to Southern Utah University, The Utah Shakespearean Festival, The Utah Summer Games, The American Children’s Christmas Festival, The Cedar City SkyFest, Neil Simon Festival, Himmelsk Festival Royal, yearly Cowboy Gathering, Rodeo, July Jamboree, Utah Midsummer Renaissance Faire, Groovefest, and Paiute Restoration Gathering & Pow-wow. Cedar City is very close to Brian Head Ski Area. Close enough to be in the Vegas desert, ski during the day with views of Cedar Breaks Red Rocks and back to the desert for dinner. You’ll enjoy your trip there.
